Automatic Pet Feeder: Is It Worth It for Dogs or Cats?
Automatic feeders are practical – but not for every pet. We explain what you need to know before buying.
Do you work long hours or travel occasionally? An automatic pet feeder can make daily life with pets much more relaxed. But there are some things to consider.
1. Which Animals Is It Suitable For?
Cats and smaller dogs are ideal – they usually eat portion-controlled and regularly. Large dogs that gobble their food need more robust models with access protection so they can't break into the device.
2. Dry Food or Wet Food?
Most automatic feeders are designed for dry food. Wet food spoils quickly – there are special refrigerated models for this, but they are more expensive.
3. App Control and Cameras
Modern feeders can be controlled via smartphone – you can set feeding times, trigger manually, and often even check on your pet via a built-in camera.
4. Capacity
A small container for 2–3 days is enough for one cat. For multiple animals or larger dogs, you need a model with at least 4–6 liters capacity.
5. Cleaning
Look for removable, dishwasher-safe parts. A feeder that is difficult to clean quickly becomes a bacteria trap.
