Security Camera Shows Black Image at Night? Here Are the Causes

Your surveillance camera delivers no image at night? We explain why this happens and how to fix it.

Everything works perfectly during the day – but as soon as it gets dark, you can't see anything. This problem is more common than you think and usually easy to fix.

1. Infrared LEDs Are Blocked

If the camera is mounted too close to a glass pane, the IR light reflects back into the lens. Result: white or black image. Solution: mount camera outside or disable IR mode for window mounting.

2. Night Vision Is Turned Off

Sounds simple, but it happens often after app updates. In the camera settings, check whether night vision mode is set to "Auto" or "On".

3. Too Little Ambient Light for Color Night Vision

Cameras with color night vision need at least minimal light. A small outdoor light nearby is often enough to significantly improve the image.

4. Dirty Lens

Dust, spider webs, or condensation on the lens scatter the IR light. Wipe briefly with a soft cloth – often immediately much better.

5. Camera Is Simply Too Old or Too Cheap

Very cheap cameras have weak IR LEDs with only 5–8 meters range. A camera with good night vision specifications makes a decisive difference here.

In our shop you'll find cameras with genuine color night vision – reliable even with little ambient light.
