A security camera can deter burglars, monitor your parcel delivery, or simply give you peace of mind. But the choice is huge – here's what actually matters.

1. Indoor vs. Outdoor

Outdoor cameras need to be weatherproof (IP65 or higher). They also need to handle temperature extremes. Indoor cameras are more affordable and often easier to install, but have no place outside.

2. Resolution: 1080p or 2K/4K?

1080p is sufficient for most purposes. If you need to read license plates or see fine details, go for 2K or 4K. The higher the resolution, the more storage space you need.

3. WiFi or Cable (PoE)?

WiFi cameras are easy to install – just connect to the network. PoE cameras (Power over Ethernet) are more stable and require only one cable. For outdoor use where stability matters, PoE is the better choice.

4. Cloud Storage vs. Local Storage

Cloud storage costs a monthly fee but is accessible from anywhere. Local storage (SD card or NAS) is a one-time cost and no monthly subscription. Many cameras offer both.

5. Night Vision and Color Night Vision

Standard night vision is black and white. Color night vision uses additional IR lights or a large sensor – it delivers color images even in near-darkness. Particularly useful for identifying people.
