Fitness Tracker Counting Steps Wrong? 5 Common Causes

Your fitness tracker shows too many or too few steps? These 5 causes are the most common reasons – and how to fix them.

You walked 10,000 steps but the tracker shows 7,800 – or vice versa. That's frustrating, but the cause is usually known.

1. Step Length Not Calibrated

Many trackers calculate steps based on a standard step length. If you're tall or short, this deviates. In the app: enter personal height and weight – this significantly improves accuracy.

2. Tracker Is Too Loose

A loosely fitting band wobbles while walking and produces phantom steps. The band should fit snugly on the wrist – not cutting in, but without play.

3. Driving or Typing Is Counted as Steps

Vibrations while driving or rhythmic typing on the keyboard can confuse some trackers. Solution: activate more sensitive anti-vibration filters in settings or remove the band during long drives.

4. Dominant Hand or Non-Dominant Hand?

Are you wearing the tracker on your writing hand? Then arm movements while writing are counted as steps. In the app settings, specify whether it's the dominant or non-dominant hand.

5. Outdated Firmware

Manufacturers regularly improve the algorithm via updates. Check for firmware updates in the app – measurement errors are often fixed with these.

VELTELO fitness trackers have precise 3-axis accelerometers and automatic updates via the app.
